Reading The Future in Fashion by Trend Union
The future is here, are you ready to dive in?
Lidewij Edelkoort has been an expert in the trend consultancy industry for more than 35 years. As she developed Trend Union in 1975, she has been working with plenty of eminent clients in the world of fashion, beauty, lifestyle and architecture. The list of brands she collaborated with includes Gucci, L’Oréal, Shiseido, Coca Cola and many others. Twice a year TrendUnion, supervised by her, provides trend forecasting books for fashion and design with colour and lifestyle information.
For this Autumn Winter 2015/16, she points out the idea of going back to pureness and the evolution of human being. According to her, the theme of the upcoming season is Embryonic and bears the new vision of fashion in the 21st century when people are actually living in a robotic era with a constant exposure to the latest technology but are still craving for human feelings. We are in the period of fast movement. Humans are required to react instantaneously and innovate ceaselessly. Nonetheless, we should not concede to this frenetic rhythm at any cost. “This is the time when we have to patiently wait for something to come,” says Lidewij Edelkoort. The inspirations come from something that makes people relaxed and warm, cuddling and playing with the ideas of living a comfortable life.
She underlines yarns as the focus of this trend. “It is interesting because the idea of yarns has been forgotten for 20 years,” she explains. It is fascinating to see how she takes the inspiration for fashion from something that we can actually find in our everyday life. She also identifies several inspirations for the new season’s trends, for instance Kangaroo.
A contradiction comes in the color play: while the idea is about being embraced by the warmth, a cool palette will be flourishing in Autumn/Winter 2015/16 collections. In Lidewij’s presentation, we could see some winter colours like grey and dark blue, but the various shades of green, pastels, and muted colours will dominate this season’s palette. “Maybe, it is because we are in the era of returning back to nature, turning green and environment-friendly, which influences fashion as well,” confirms Lidewij Edelkoort.
The social change affects the trends as well. As Lidewij Edelkoort mentions, the birth of babies and the idea of nurturing is coming up and giving the inspiration to fashion. This relates to the idea of Kangaroo that she took as inspiration, referring to parents carrying their children on their bellies and extending their bodies to nurture. The translation to this trend comes in the accentuation of pockets and zippers, that will take a big part in the next year’s trend.
As this trend prediction is presented, we can see that these trends are not an invention. We’ve already seen these tendencies before. The trend forecasters’ job is to catch this little vibration and distribute it when it is ready to grow up and become a new trend. In the end, as fashion enthusiasts we could collect it as knowledge, agree or disagree, and follow the wave. Happy diving in the future trends!
