Trend Alert: ballet-inspired fashion
Maybe you were one of those kids who spent most of the time in the ballet studio after school. If not, I am sure that at least one of your besties had that great passion for ballet. Our childhood memories of fairy-like girls in pink tutus floating through the air was recently taken up by brands like Dior, Marc Cain and Valentino which showed ballet inspired ready-to-wear collections.
The style was not only adopted by luxury brands, but also by fast fashion retailers who jumped on the bandwagon. German online retailer Edited came up with a whole collection called “Urban Ballerina“, including trench coats and tops with ruffles and bows, among others.
To get the full prima ballerina look, these are the key pieces you need:
1. Tulle dresses and skirts
Molly Goddard’s Spring 2017 collection includes this romantic and partly transparent dress. If this might be a little too much romance for your everyday look, the girly vibe of a tulle skirt can be dressed down with blue jeans and a sweater (as seen in the streetstyle picture). You can also combine it with an edgy leather jacket or heavy knit in order to play down the look.

2. Bodysuits/ Leotards
Bodysuits come in many different versions. First of all, they are super handy because tucking in a shirt or blouse can be extremely annoying, especially when wearing a skirt. The already figure-accentuating silhouette a leotard gives you, can be underlined by a crossback model. We recommend the one in the right pricture from Urban Outfitters.

The streetstyles show that you can create several different looks with slipdresses. If you can’t wait for the warm temperatures to arrive, layering is a good option: Wear your delicate dress on top of a pair of jeans and a white shirt. Besides the classic black dress, a shimmering metallic color makes it more elegant. Extra lace gives an even more romantic impression.

4. Ballet flats
Especially those iconic Miu Miu ballet-inspired slippers (left picture) kicked off the trend. The buckles and printed ribbons give an extra edgy and modern twist. Miu Miu‘s new product range also includes ballerinas that resemble espadrilles.

Of course this trend is not completely exhausted by the pieces introduced above. Basically items with a feminine tendency, flounces, ruffles and ribbons work! If you want to give your look an extra ballet touch, make sure to wear those pieces in a light pink hue or a delicate flesh colour. The best thing about it: You might already have some pink items in your closet as ‘rose quartz’ was the Pantone color of 2016.
Please leave a comment and let us know how you like to style your tulle skirts, slipdresses, etc.!
