FIVE TIMES OUR JAWS DROPPED DURING FASHION WEEK SS18

Every year, fashion week takes us on a journey to some of the most renown fashion capitals of the world: New York, London, Paris, and Milan. Over the years, some have criticized how fashion shows have become repetitive and institutionalized. In fact, some brands have even decided to stop showcasing their designs at fashion week. Because of this, many brands have decided to break this repetitiveness by bringing something unusual and quirky to the runway. Here are five unexpected events that happened during fashion week and reaffirmed our obsession with this $2 billion dollar industry.

NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM

As it turns out, Emmy award-winning actor Ben Stiller, isn’t the only one who can borrow a New York City museum for fun at night. Carolina Herrera upped the famed Night at the Museum star by hosting her runway show at New York’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). It is the first time that MoMA has hosted a fashion show and this surprise surely left our jaws agape and defied conventional catwalk shows.

Balmain’s runway show was more conventional–that is if Parisians can do conventional. Hosted at the prestigious Opera house, Palais Garnier, the Balmain show reiterated the opulence and exclusivity that the luxury French brand aims to give its customers. Each look was eloquent, elegant, and exceptional.

HIP HOP BROKE THE RUNWAY

Last year, a video of ballerinas dancing en pointe to hip hop went viral and this year, they performed at Moncler’s runway show during Paris Fashion Week.

GENDER FLUIDITY ON THE CATWALK?

No, your eyes did not deceive you. Yes, there were men walking the Gucci runway during Milan Fashion Week – even though it’s the Women’s Spring/Summer collection. Are we mad about it? Not one bit. By mixing both men and women on the runway, Gucci breaks the stereotype and allows us to focus on the aesthetic of its whole collection- without confirming to an ideology of traditional womenswear or traditional menswear.

IT’S A 90S REUNION

Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Carla Bruni, Claudia Schiffer, and Helena Christensen surprised everyone with their appearance on the Versace during Milan Fashion Week.

Strutting to Freedom, these 90s supermodel icons broke all receptiveness of fashion week and proved that age ain’t nothing but a number!
