Slick Woods, the new model icon

It has been a long time the fashion industry did not see a character like Simone Thompson AKA Slick Woods, whose breakthrough happened in Fall/Winter 2017, as she was working for an array of major designers of the fashion industry like Marc Jacobs, Fendi or Fenti X Puma.

However, Thompson’s fate could have been otherwise. The American model born in Minneapolis, MN but raised by her grandmother in Los Angeles due to a mother several times convicted and sent to prison. She was four when her mother Leah was an inmate which led to a time of uncertainty for Slick Woods wandering from motel to motel until settling in California.

At the age of 18, Thompson followed in her mother’s footsteps and went to jail for 3 months. Yet, Slick Wood’s kind and generous personality was truly undermined by the brutality of the environment. Over the coming months, sitting at a bus stop, model Ash Stymest scooted the Minneapolis native and introduced her to photographer Dave Mushegain. Later on, she signed her fist modelling contract with The Lions and worked twice with Kanye West’s Yeezy. She stated in magazines that the artist did not pay her the first time she worked for his brand. “Kanye did not pay me, I didn’t see my money until the next Yeezy job I did.” A year later, she appeared in Clavin Klein’s Fall 2016 campaign and walked in runway shows for Marc Jacobs, Jeremy Scott and Fenty X Puma. The famous English photographer, Tim Walker shot Slick Woods accompanied by English model Adwoa Aboah and Elliott Jay Brown for the i-D stunningly creative issue cover. Slick Woods was also part of the cast for the Pirelli calendar photographed again by Tim Walker, simpered by Lewis Carroll’s take Alice Adventures in Wonderland.

But why this sudden success? Slick Woods is the embodiment of her generation; she doesn’t give a damn about what people think of her. “Expressing yourself without censure through your clothing is becoming more influential—and more important,” she says. This might be why the whole fashion industry is crazy about this badass girl.
